Character
Name: Xie Lian
Canon: Heaven Official's Blessing
Canon point: After Book 8 + Extra Chapters.
CRAU?: No.
Age: 800+
History: This covers the majority of his history. I will use bullet points for the rest:
‣ He pursues a fetus spirit that turns out to be the son of one of his dear friends, Feng Xin. The spirit is angry and violent because it was robbed of life and forsaken by his father. It seems in the end only Jun Wu and the child's mother can get on the baby's good side.
‣ The story of the Black Water Demon Xuan is then revealed and as Xie Lian's friend, Shi Qingxuan, is drawn into said Supreme's trap (and eventually kidnapped by him). Xie Lian learns how greatly wronged Xuan has been and he accepts the brutal death of his friend's brother as justice. Yet he pities Qingxuan and continues his friendship with him - even when the god is reverted to mortality.
‣ When Mount Tonglu is opened once again, Xie Lian and a much smaller Hua Cheng make the journey to the Kiln (where Supreme Ghosts become Supremes). He discovers the true identity of the White Clothed Calamity and he learns of Hua Cheng's deep, endless love for him in the form of ten thousand statues. (All of the statues are of him in various states of his life.) When fighting Jun Wu later, he uses the largest statue to fight the Heavenly statue that Jun Wu builds out of Heaven's mansions.
‣ With the truth of his agonizing past revealed (Jun Wu was the catalyst of all of it), Xie Lian is then reminded of his San Lang's love for him. Hua Cheng breaks Xie Lian's Cursed Shackles by pouring more spiritual power in him than ever. Then he fades, leaving Xie Lian alone for a year. In that time, Xie Lian builds them a comfortable home on his favorite mountain and abstains from visiting the reconstructed Heaven (though he is technically the strongest god in existence). Jun Wu is imprisoned under the mountain that once housed the Kiln.
‣ He is reunited with his soulmate and they have adventures of their own in Ghost City and beyond. The extra chapters continue to build on the strength and sweetness of their bond.
Personality: At the beginning, when Xie Lian was the Prince of Xianle, he was a bright, energetic boy with unfailing optimism. He trusted in the gods and himself, foreseeing a bright future for his people (even when he had frequent arguments with his father). Unfortunately, thanks to the cruelty of the Emperor of Heaven, after Xie Lian uttered a phrase that infuriated him beyond reason, he was nearly crushed by grief, hatred and bitterness when his kingdom fell and his people were consumed by a terrible affliction. He almost did the unthinkable after he was blamed by his people for the tragedy that befell them (and stabbed 100 times with a sword) and he was only saved from doing more damage by Hua Cheng (who, at the time, was only known as a random soldier who died in war).
He chose to fight Jun Wu, the Emperor of Heaven, so that he would be expelled a second time from those lofty ranks. He even gave up on hope until a simple farmer showed him kindness and reminded him that good does exist in the world. Thus he devoted himself to paying penance knowing it would never be enough to absolve him of his sins. He lived humbly and never complained even when he was broken or burned or wounded. He collected refuse and traveled around, going by different names and trying to do good.
Centuries passed just like that and then he Ascended for a third time. His path also crossed with old friends and Hua Cheng. The more time he spends with the latter in particular, the more he begins to enjoy his days, flowering back into a man who isn't completely unlike his princely self (though far more humble). It is thanks to Hua Cheng's love and the care of his friends that Xie Lian is able to find pride in himself again. He stops being an observer, detached from the brilliant lives of others, and begins to live his own life again. He learns that he can like himself and that the past can be the past.
As he is now, he will always be humble and kind, never taking from anyone he meets and eager to help. But he is also certain of who he is and what he can do. He accepts his past, his present and his future and he holds no bitterness in his heart. For a god of war, he has a strangely big heart and yet he is just the sort of general that any side wants. He knows strategy. He knows how to end battles quickly and how to save the most lives. Xie Lian is a simple man (and god), but he is grounded in his convictions to cause the least harm possible - however, you must forgive him if, at times, his temper flares in bouts of sassy replies. He is an old man; he is allowed a bit of sarcasm, surely.
Powers and abilities: He can use Ruoye, his sentient bandage, to knock opponents down and bind them. He is also skilled with a sword and a decent musician (since he used to busk on the streets).
His Cursed Shackles have been broken and he is stronger than ever. He is the top god in Heaven thanks to the sheer amount of cultivation he has done over 800 years. As such, he can use his spiritual power to perform complicated, intense spells when they are necessary. Since he still retains his humble heart, he doesn't use his power at random or to show off. To those who know him, he is the same Xie Lian who was Shackled by Jun Wu's might.
Chosen faction: Undine
Suitability: He is a god that has Ascended three times to Heaven. The only technology he is accustomed to originated in ancient China and he is far more accustomed to relying on his spiritual powers/physical prowess.
